Facebook's new interface design for displaying pictures has been enabled to only a small group of users.It has eye catchy UI(User Interface) outclassing Flickr on presentation grounds.

Google shocked Web users on Tuesday when it announced that it might pull out of China after Chinese human rights activists' Gmail accounts were targeted by hackers. Now, security experts have revealed that those attacks were part of a far larger campaign of state-sponsored corporate espionage.

Silicon Valley-based security firm VeriSign iDefense says computers at more than 30 U.S. companies -- including, according to The Washington Post, Microsoft, Yahoo, Dow Chemical and defense giant Northrop Grumman -- were penetrated during the same operation.

Execs at iDefense, which analyzed the spy software sent to one firm, say there's strong evidence of Chinese government involvement in the strike. "The IP addresses used to launch the attacks are known to be associated with previous attacks from groups that are either directly employed agents of the Chinese state or amateur hackers that are proxies for them that have attacked other U.S. companies in the past," Eli Jellenc, head of international cyberintelligence at iDefense, toldcnet.com.

Web criminals cracked their way into the company computers with a scam known as "phishing." It works like this: An e-mail, disguised to look like a message from a friend or co-worker, is sent to an employee at the target firm. The employee unsuspectingly opens it and downloads an attachment, possibly disguised as a photo or pdf file, containing a "sleeper" program. Once installed, the program lets the attacker remotely control the PC, giving him access to e-mails and important documents, and even allowing him to switch on webcams and microphones.

It's not unusual for U.S. companies to be targeted with these sorts of attacks. But security experts say this wave of hacks, which exploited multiple flaws in different software programs, showed a new level of sophistication. "Usually, it's a group using one type of malicious code per target," Jellenc told The Washington Post. "In this case, they're using multiple types against multiple targets -- but all in the same attack campaign. That's a marked leap in coordination."

The attack also revealed the growing threat posed to the U.S. economy by Chinese hackers. Several experts believe the operation's main goal was the theft of intellectual property (IP) -- such as the source code that powers software programs, or blueprints for new technologies. That kind of top-secret information would allow China to speed up its transition from an export-based economy, which simply manufactures goods designed by other nations, to one based around cutting-edge research and development. Indigenous firms could then start to challenge the Western competition.

"If you're having trouble [innovating] or if you want to prime the pump, the best way is to go out and steal cutting-edge IP," James Mulvenon, director of Defense Group Inc.'s Center for Intelligence Research and Analysis, Computer World. "It's a plausible explanation for why they would go after Silicon Valley companies on such a broad scale, because they're really trying to jump-start IT innovation in China."

Google hasn't explicitly blamed the Chinese government for the hack, which saw dozens of gmail accounts used by activists in the U.S., Europe and China "routinely accessed" by "third parties" located in the People's Republic. However, the company announced that it would stop censoring search results on Google.cn. That move was widely seen as designed to embarrass Beijing, which stops its citizens from accessing any site that mentions "Tiananmen Square," "Tibetan independence" and dozens of other phrases.

That action, along with its threat to quit the country, suggests the Internet giant suspects state involvement in the hacking attack. "They wouldn't be taking an action suggesting that they cannot operate in China ... if it was not related to the Chinese government," Leslie Harris, president and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology, told Computer World.

The Obama administration has taken a hard line on China's alleged involvement. In a statement Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked the government to explain itself and said that Google's allegations "raise very serious concerns and questions."

But answers may be hard to come by. At a Thursday press conference, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu simply noted that hacking was illegal in China. That same day, State Council Minister Wang Chen implied that Beijing wouldn't allow an uncensored Google.cn. "Properly guiding Internet opinion is a major measure for protecting Internet information security," Wang said, according to the BBC.

While Google is not the largest search engine in China -- Baidu.cn has cornered 60% of the search market -- its absence would be sorely felt. The search engine indexes millions of Chinese Web sites and digitally connects the country to the rest of the world. Without Google, China's Internet will essentially exist in a bubble. And for a country determined to become a high-tech player, that's a definite step back.

The site has created quite a stir in the virtual world, after disowning members because they put on weight after Christmas and New Year festivities and no longer qualified for membership. The company said it expelled 1,520 users from the US, 88 people from Russia, 832 from the UK, 176 from Turkey, 533 from Canada, 220 from Denmark, 510 from Poland, 323 from France, 425 from Germany and 402 from Italy. No one from India was ousted.

* Connect your Pen Drive or USB drive to your computer .
* Now a dialogue window will popup asking you to choose among the options as shown in the figure.

* Don't choose any of them , Just simply click Cancel .
* Now go to Start--> Run and type cmd to open the Command Promt window .
* Now go to My Computer and Check the Drive letter of your USB drive or Pen Drive. ( E.g. If it is written Kingston (I , then I: will be the drive letter .)
* In the Command Window ( cmd ) , type the drive letter: and Hit Enter .
* Now type dir/w/o/a/p and Hit Enter.
* You will get a list of files . In the list , search if anyone of the following do exist .

1. Autorun.inf
2. New Folder.exe
3. Bha.vbs
4. Iexplore.vbs
5. Info.exe
6. New_Folder.exe
7. Ravmon.exe
8. RVHost.exe or any other files with .exe Extension .

* If you find any one of the files above , Run the command attrib -h -r -s -a *.* and Hit Enter.
* Now Delete each File using the following Command del filename ( E.g del autorun.inf ) .
* That's it . Now just scan your USB drive with the anti virus you have to ensure that you made your Pen Drive free of Virus .

Now Unplug your Pen Drive or USB device and Plug it again to your Laptop/PC . Before removing your Pen Drive from others Computer , Don't forget to search for .exe files using the Windows search and remove them .

'Do you blog?' was one of the most happening questions a couple of years back. You were considered cool if you had one, and still cooler if you had one in a regional language! What made blogs happening? The fact that you could connect with a number of people scattered all over the world who'd know you for your words took the online world by storm. But then, you may ask are all blogs written by anonymous people? No, they are not. From celebs to common people, from cooking recipes to politics and space, there are thousands who blog about a zillion things under the sun and beyond it.

In a span of less than 5 years, blogging has evolved from being an online journal to sharing your thoughts from anywhere at any time. You can fix templates, update them and even blog from your mobile phones. And this, in a way gave rise to micro-blogging, with Twitter being first on the scene. So what exactly does one do on Twitter, you may ask. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on your account, visible on your friends' profiles, those that decide to 'follow' you. You can also tweet up links to your photos or videos. This is perhaps the quickest and chirpiest way to keep in touch with a lot of people.

But what happens if you are in a mood for writing more and not really as much as you would in a blog? Enter the concept of macro-blogging. This is a blogging concept that doesn't restrict your thoughts to 140 but doesn't let them go beyond 1400 characters. The most popular macro-blogging platform out there today is Woofer. But here's the catch - your macro-blog posts have to be exactly 1400 characters long. Talk about precision.

And that's not all - there's nano-blogging (less than 14 characters) and meso-blogging (lies somewhere between macro and micro-blogging, though we really can't comment on what multiple of 14 it is) as well. For the poetically inclined, there's Haiku blogging, via Japan's nano-blogging platform, Chuitter. 1. Startup Processes

* Go to: Start>Run>Type "msconfig"(without the quotes)
* Go to the Startup Tab
* Uncheck any processes you don't use at startup(e.x. Quicktime, AIM, MSN)
* Click Apply then Restart

2. CCleaner
CCleaner is a great little application that deletes cookies, clears cache, empties your recycle bin, etc.

* Download CCleaner(from google)
* Iinstall CCleaner then Run Cleaner it(note: This will clear your cookies which means your saved passwords and usernames will be gone)
* Go to the Registry tab and Scan for Issues

Notifications

Hide an archive inside a picture with no special programs

A short tutorial to show people how its possible to hide files within a picture file (especially png and jpeg files) and all you'll need is a program like WinRAR.

Firstly you'll need to find two things: the first is a picture that you'll use to hide your file in, the second is the actual file you want to hide.

Put both in the same folder, open a command prompt and navigate there.

Once there you'll need to put your file that you want to hide inside a zip file (rar or zip will work just fine, put a password or whatever if you want too). After this type the following into the command prompt:

where display.png is the picture in which you want to hide the file, secret_message.rar is the file you want to hide and fake.png is the file name that you want the result to be created as.

After this is done open the newly created image file in your paint package and verify that it opens correctly. To see the hidden file all you need to do is open it in your favorite compression program and your done! One hidden file that can be uploaded to image sites and so forth.

As I said you can also put a password on the rar hidden rar file in order to add extra protection.

How to remove recycle bin from your desktop Tip:

Open Regedit by going to START - RUN and type Regedit and hit enter. Then you should navigate to following entry in registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\
Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and delete it. This action should remove recycle bin from your desktop.

How to stop new programs installed balloon from coming up tip:

Further more you can reduce the time it takes for Windows to issue kill directive to all active/hung applications.
In doing this only constraint that you should make sure exists is that HungAppTimeout is greater than WaitToKillAppTimeout. Change the values of WaitToKillAppTimeout to say 3500 (since default value for HungAppTimeout 5000 and for WaitToKillAppTimeout is 20000)

In Windows Explorer, you can customize the toolbar to make Explorer even more handy. The Toolbar is the bar of icons directly underneath the menu bar. Lock the Taskba - If you find that your Windows XP Taskbar keeps being changed, or moved to one side or the top of your screen, and you didn't mean to have it do that, this tip is for you. Once you have your Task Bar arranged the way you like it, in the right location on the screen, and with all the right toolbars and icons, you can lock it, so that it won't get changed accidentally. Hey this time no registry trick even though there are ways in registry to do it. In earlier operating systems only those CD that had autorun.inf file in their root directory were able to execute on its own but with advent of WINDOWS XP it has become possible with just about anything. Well sometimes it is good but there are other times when you want to avoid this part of automation. What would I do. Simply press SHIFT key when you enter a CD in your CD drive. It won't Auto play. For those of you, who do want a registry hack. Here it is:
Open Registry and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\Explorer] and look for key "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and set its value to 185 (decimal). This would stop autoplay.

This tip to speed up the Start Menu in Windows XP.
Did you know you can customize the speed of the Start Menu by editing a Registry Key.

* Click Start, and then click Run.
* Type Regedit in the box, and then click OK.
* Expand the menu in the left panel and select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop folder.

* In the Value Data box, change to default value for the menu speed from 400 to a lesser number, such as 1.

Customizing Windows Explorer Context menu (right click menu in windows explorer)

Ever wondered how does the right click menu (which is actually a context menu) work ? For example, when I right click in windows explorer, I see an option which says "open command window here". Do You know why I see this ? Well I see this because I have following entries in my registry.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd]
@="Open Command Window Here"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd\command]
@="C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe /k cd "%1""
If You have never used a tweaking utility and have newly installed Windows XP, You would not see this option. You would have to navigate to [[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive] go and create two subkeys ("cmd" and within that "command" and would have to put the text "Open Command Window Here" without quotes in default string value of "cmd" key and the text "C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe /k CD"%1"" without quotes in default string value of command key). After this You need to REBOOT for these changes to take effect.
Trick is in adding similar entries for other applications as well even though its much harder to come with ideas about what to put in the context menu!!!!

First Look | iPhone 4G Preview?

Apple is hard at work on…well…something. We all know that., right? Sources say they are working on either a new generation iPhones or a tablet. But the question is really, if it is the iPhone 4G, which have been reported that Apple is currently trying out on Verizon’s new 4G network they are developing, what features will it sport? There is at this time no facts about Apple having struck a deal with Verizon but sources say they are truly working on adapting the new and improved iPhone 4G for specifically their network.

So, what will the new iPhone 4G look like? What features will it have and when will it be released? I guess there is no way of knowing and with the insane secrecy Apple always applies when they are about to hit the market with something entirely new and “revolutionary” I guess we can’t but wait to see what they say and reveal at the next Keynote.

Or wait…is that really true? There must be some way of knowing what the new iPhone 4G will look like and what it’s capable of doing…right? It so happens I have found a video of what seems to be a preliminary promotion video of the new iPhone 4G. That’s right! Isn’t that insane!!!

Hm, wait… If you ask me I’d think this one is as fake as any other video, picture or facts said to have been obtained from Apple’s highly secured R&D bunker. Or what do you think?

What is ImageHost Grabber?
ImageHost Grabber is a firefox extension that will download all images on a page that are hosted on an image host. You find this often in web forums where people will use a free image host to post a gallery of pictures. Keep in mind that the majority of image hosts will wrap the image in a web page. IHG is designed for these kind of image hosts. Plans are to add support for direct links to images and full-size images hosted by the forums

Many forums and blogs don't have the capacity to store images on their own servers. Instead, posters are required to use a third-party host to share images. Many free image hosts exist, such as imagevenue, imagebam, and imageshack to serve the purposes of sharing images. However, these image hosts do not give direct links to stored images. Instead, what's given are links to html pages that encapsulate the images. If you want to save an entire gallery of images that are hosted on these image hosts, simple tools like "wget" and "downthemall" will not suffice (at least not without some serious scripting).

ImageHost Grabber (IHG) is a powerful utility that makes the task of downloading these galleries a simple task. You can think of it as IHG doing all the work of "open new link, right-click, save-as". But the functionality of IHG doesn't stop there.

IHG can automatically create the directories for you, and even prefix file names and directories so that images you download can be sorted chronologically and be sorted by the original page order. Years of research of download failure recovery has been implemented into IHG to ensure all available images are downloaded properly. If that wasn't not enough, IHG can even save a session to try again later. IHG also includes a special feature for forums that will allow you to download an entire thread of images. So if you have come across galleries in which you had to save images one at a time this add-on will make your life easier....

Sites like imagevenue, picasa, blogspot etc etc are supported...you can get the whole list at the site...

The only thing is that it doesn't support picscrazy... YET.....
Though there is a host file editor .pdf file tutorial on the site. Perhaps some learned people here can add picscrazy to the list...

How to store a picture or a video secretly on your mobile?

1.Just hack ur mobile using hellocarbide then install xplorer, use "caps off " and then create a folder inside private folder using xplorer and dump anything u want in it and then execute "caps on"
note: caps off and caps on icon appears when u install hellocarbide, by default u cannot access private folder of ur mobile.

unfortunately bluetornado is using an n-series fone which is a symbian device....The best OS for fones as of now and also head cracking as well...for this reason all symbian users have to go through this tedious process of hacking their phones....but thanx to authors of helloOX and hellocarbide and the likes, we can do it easily now.

By the way...in a symbian V3 device, just hiding folders wont do the trick as they will pop up in the gallery...It didn't work in my device but its worth trying...

open x-plore and press 0(zero) to open config menu, select show hidden files and show system folders & press ok.

After that in xplore main window,

press 9 to create a folder.

After creating, press 6 on that folder to open its attributes. select hidden & ok.

after that , copy your files to the hidden folder and change their attributes to hidden 1 by 1...

this should do the trick..but the videos will still be available to watch in smartmovie or divx players...

This problem will be avoided totally with rom patcher( enable, disable caps)

Installing Ubuntu [Linux] - A tutorial for Newbies

The first step to install Ubuntu was to creat a partition on my existing hard drive. There are two ways how you can do it in vista:

1. In built 'Shrink Disc' feature in Vista
2. Use a disk partition software to do it for you.

Ubuntu or Mint comes with an inbuilt disk partitioner. What is required is a unallocated free space on your hard drive so that it can be partitioned while installing Ubuntu.

1. Making Space using "Shrink Disc" feature in Vista:
a. Log on to Vista.
b. Right-Click on "My computer" in the main menu and select "Manage"
c. It will ask for administrator password, enter it and click "allow"
d. Click on Disc Management.
e. There is will show the available partitions and external storage devices if any
f. Right Click on the disc partition you want to shrink and select "shrink volume"
g. Vista will assess how much space can be made free.
h. It will suggest the value which can be made free. Be sure that this is at least 10-15 GB. If you dont have this space, you will have to delete some data to make space for the partition.
i. Then select "shrink"
j. Vista will shrink the volume and show the new freed space as "unallocated" space.
k. After this close the window. You are done with shrinking

2. Making Space using a Disk Partition software:
a. I had problem that vista used to say "access denied" when I tried to shrink the main C: Drive (I had only on partition )
b. So I used a Free Disk Partition Software to shrink the space.
c. You can use the following software: EasyUS partition Master-Home Edition which you can download here: http://www.partition-tool.com/
d. Using this it is easy to create space for a new partition.
e. Using the above program, select the partition you want to shrink/resize
f. Using the "Resize" tool you can shrink the volume and the rest of the space would be shown as "unallocated space"
g. Apply the changes and you are done

The next step is to install Ubuntu

1. You will need to download the latest ISO for Ubuntu or Mint from here:

2. You will need to burn this ISO image on to a CD (700 MB or more).
3. For burning this ISO you will have to use an ISO burning software. One such free software is: Free ISO burner: http://www.freeisoburner.com/
4. Be sure to burn the ISO image at a very slow speed. This extra time spent will help you install Linux trouble-free.
5. When the disc is ready, restart the computer. Be sure that in BIOS setup the CD drive is above the hard disc in boot priority.
6. Once restarted the disc will boot before the hard disc.
7. In the menu that is displayed, select "run installer" and follow the instructions.
8. Once you have selected language, Location and Keyboard configuration....the disk partitioner of ubuntu will run and show you various options as to where Ubuntu should be installed.
9. Select "Largest continuous free space" as this will select the "unallocated space" that we have created in the earlier step.
10. After this follow the next instructions to complete the installation.
11. The installation will prompt you to import the settings from Vista. If you want do import these.
12. I preferred not to import as it will copy the documents from Vista partition to the new partition of Ubuntu and just eat up the partition space. You can always access the vista documents from Ubuntu as Vista partion will be shown as a hard disk in "My computer".
13. Complete the installation. It will prompt to restart the computer. Do so.
14. After restart, the menu will show Ubuntu and Vista a dual boot OS and now you are free to choose the OS you want to load.

Using Windows software on Linux

This is the first question and hence a hurdle in people switching over to Linux. I would like to specify that...yes most windows products work on Linux

Wine is a sfotware for Linux which acts as a "think layer" to help run Windows softwares without letting them know that they are working on Linux

Wine creates a C: drive which is absent in Linux and installs and runs these programs on this C: drive (this is the best I can put in Layman's language.)

How to install WINE?

1. Installing programs is not as on Windows. There is a dedicated application as in Windows "add/remove programs" wherein you can install and uninstall the programs on Linux.
2. The detailed procedure to install WINE on Ubuntu is specified here:http://www.winehq.org/download/deb (If you have any trouble installing WINE...let me know...I will try to guide you)
3. Once you have installed WINE, installing EXE files is easy as on Windows.
4. Right Click on any EXE file you want to install and select "open with 'wine windows program loader'". This will install the program as in Windows.
5. Not all programs might run but most do!
6. After Wine is installed, a menu for WINE is visible in the main applications Menu. All the programs installed with WINE are visible under this sub-menu.
7. You can also uninstall any Windows program from this WINE sub-menu.

The programs I have till now installed using WINE and working fine are:

1. MozBackup
2. Firefox
3. Thunderbird
4. AutoCAD

why I installed FF and thunderbird using WINE is another story...coming up in next post

Some softwares...the way I installed those and made mistakes and installed in the proper way:

Thunderbird/Firefox:

I use thunderbird as my email client. I had more than 2000 emails in my thunderbird with lot of extensions and customizations.

Same with my firefox browser....had lot of extensions with hell lot of customizations.

My problem was to import all this into ubuntu from vista. I had a thread here in Technical help wherein I was seeking the way to backup these mozzila softwares. I came across Mozbackup (google for more info)

So before I installed ubuntu and partitioned by HDD I mozbackuped by TB and FF.
After the successful installation of Ubuntu by the above mentioned procedure...it was time to cofigure my TB and FF.

The problem was...Mozbackup doesnt work with Linux! So I installed it using WINE as mentioned above. But it did not recognize the FF and TB already present on Ubuntu. I was stuck

Os I decided to do smthing which was very stupid of me ...but nonetheless it worked wonders for me! I installed the Windows version of FF and TB in ubuntu using WINE . Here after installation, Mozbackup detected FF and TB and I was able to configure FF and TB exactly as on vista.

But the problem was, it being a wine program was a bit slow. I could not directly open any attachments as not all programs were configured in WINE to open the filetypes (remember WINE system and Linux are totally different worlds when operating the programs installed under those!). I had to save the attachments in a specified directory before I could open those.

Nonetheless I had been using FF and TB this way for almost 15 days with some loss of functionality but still much better than working on Windows Vista

But then again...couple of days I back I was goggling to make my life easier with the above issue...and came to know the following procedure to configure the Ubuntu installed FF and TB the way it was on Vista and without using WINE

There is a HIDDEN folder for both the application in the \home\ directory. one each for FF and TB. All you have to do is COPY all the files from the "profiles" sub-directory of your similar folder in VISTA (user\application data\) and replace all the files when it asks to SKIP/REPLACE the existing files. (Be sure that TB and FF is not running when you copy these files). Ones you are done with this, your FF and TB installed on Ubuntu will work like the counterparts in Vista...absolutely nothing is different. You may have to re-configure some extensions. The directory paths in the extensions (like 'save image as' and 'download sort') to the folders will be different in ubuntu compared to Vista.

This was so simple and I was using a more difficult way to backup my TB and FF

Shortcut to Clear Recently Opened Documents

You had two lines in your batch file. And the the way windows executes a batch file is that if one of the statement fails, the batch processing does not terminates, it will continue executing all statements irrespective of whether any previous statements passed or failed.
So, if C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Recent\ directory didnt exist on your system, it failed and stayed in root directory that is c:\
The next statement "del ." deleted everything (that it could) from your root - which is something you never wanted.

If you had read one of my previous posts on this thread i said to ** REPLACE ** "cd " with "del " so that even if it failed, nothing harmful would be done.

Illegal solutions will work, but some virus scanners might object the use of "Filesystes.Scripting" object.

Your safest bet would be to do the following -
1. identify your "recent" folders - they are just ordinary folders on your drive just like other regular ones. except that windows keeps some different icon for them when you view them in your windows explorer.
2. Because different versions of windows maintain different folder structures under "C:\Documents and Settings" so i cant tell you what your folder path would look like.
On my system it looks like C:\Documents and Settings\\Recent
where might be "Administrator" or the user name you use to login into windows.
It might well be something like -
C:\Documents and Settings\devendra.khoker\\Local Settings\Recent
or
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\My Recent Documents

Find yours.

2. Then create a text file on your C:\ (I have a reason to put it in root dir) and put the following lines in it -
DEL
"C:\Documents and Settings\\" /p

Repeat this lines for all the user names you want to make this happen for.
Please note that -
a. The entire path is enclosed in double quotes to make it appear as a single argument to del command.
b. there is a second argument /p - It will ensure a "silent" operation. The command wont wait for your response to "All files will be deleted. Are you sure?" type of prompts

3. Exit notepad after saving.
4. Rename the file to something like "clear.bat" - whatever before the dot is unimportant, but it should have an extenstion of "bat" to be able to function properly. Windows in default settings DOES NOT display file extensions. So you cant change the extenstions if you havent changed these default settings.
There are two ways to do it -
1. START -> RUN -> Type "CMD" ->
2. CD \
3. REN [your-original-file-name] clear.bat

OR

1. Windows Explorer -> Tools Menu -> Folder Options -> View Tab ->
Clear the tick mark in "Hide extensions for known file types"
2. select [your-original-text-file] and right click -> rename.

Finally, place a shortcut to this file on your desktop.

Anybody who knows me knows that I'm not exactly a morning person… even with the awesome Tassimo coffee machine I got this year for Xmas, I still don't want to get out of bed. But now I can use my computer's loud speakers to help wake me up easily.
The solution for my waking up problem is a website called Kuku Klok, combined with turning my speakers all the way up.

Note: of course this requires your computer being in the same room that you are sleeping in.

Using Kuku Klok
Once you load the page, you simply set the time you'd like to wake up:

Select the sound you want (previewing it helps to test if your speaker volume is up enough)

And then click SET ALARM.

The great thing about this website is that it will work even if your internet connection goes down after setting the alarm. (In fact you can use this site offline by doing File \ Save As \ HTML Complete).

Disable Other Windows Sounds
One problem you might notice is that Windows will sometimes make other sounds during the night which might interrupt your sleep… I recommend going to Control Panel \ Sounds and then setting the Sound Scheme to "No Sounds" on the Sounds tab (works the same in XP or Vista).

The only real downside is that now all my co-workers will read this article and start harassing me more when I'm late to work.

go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ in your regestry, create a new key called "StorageDevicePolicies" (without quotes ) and add a new Dword called "WriteProtect" and value=0. Do this for "ControlSet001" and "ControlSet002" also.

Close your registry and restart the computer. Now, connect the drive & do a quick format.

VOILA!!! your drive is ready but alas!! all your current data will be lost.

For most people, VLC is the favorite media player because it plays everything they throw at it without hiccups. No hunting for codec. But VLC can do a lot of other things as well. Find out how many of these listed below you knew, and how many you did not.
1. Rip DVDs: VLC includes a basic DVD ripper. You probably would never use it when there are better DVD rippers available, but it helps to know that you can in fact, get a decent quality DVD rip with VLC. To rip a movie follow these steps:

Go to the Media menu and choose Convert/Save. Click on the Disc tab.

Here you can adjust the Starting Position and rip only specific titles or chapters.
Enter file name making sure to end with .MPG, and start ripping.
Click Save.

2. Record videos: With the new VLC, you can record videos during playback. The record button is hidden by default. To see it, click on View>Advanced Control. The record button will now appear. Clicking on the button while playing a movie or video will start recording. Clicking again will stop recording.

3. Play RAR files: Do you know VLC can play videos zipped inside RAR files? They play like normal video files and you can even use the seek bar. If the RAR file is split into several files, no problem. Just load the first part (.part001.rar ) and it will automatically take the rest of the parts and play the whole file.
4. Play in ASCII mode: VLC media player has an amusing ability, to playback movies in ASCII art. To enable ASCII mode, open VLC media player and click on Tools>Preferences. Open the section “Video” section and under “Output” select “Color ASCII art video output” from the drop down menu. Save it. Now play any video file to enjoy the ASCII art.

5. Listen to online radio: VLC includes hundreds of Shoutcast radio stations. You just need to enable it through Media>Services Discovery>Shoutcast radio listings. Now, open the Playlist and browse through the stations.

6. Convert Audio and Video formats: In VLC you can convert video and audio files from one format to another. Several different formats are supported like MP4, WMV, AVI, OGG, MP3 etc. To access the converter:

Go to Media>Convert/Save.
Load the file you want to convert using the Add button and click Convert.
Now choose the output format and output file location.

7. Download YouTube and other online videos: First grab the URL of the YouTube video page. Now click on Media>Open Network stream. Paste the URL and click Play.
Once VLC starts streaming the video, click Tools>Codec Information and at the bottom of the window you will see a Location box. Copy the URL and paste it on your browser’s address bar. The browser will now download the file which you can save it to your hard disk. Alternatively, you can record the video. (See #2).

* Protect your PC from dust. Dust causes the CPU cooling fan to jam and slow down thereby gradually heating your CPU and affecting the processing speed. Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the CPU. Never use vacuum.
